Vice Emulator for Linux

Vice is a fully functional C64 emulator that runs on Linux (and Windows).

For the purposes of this document, I will focus on installing and using Vice on Linux.

My Search for a Linux C64 Emulator:

I tried ccs64 for linux but it did not work.

I could not find pc64 (which I did not like! - but Ealan did)

Fortunately, Vice is platform independant....

Installing Vice on Linux (Mandrake 9.0):

I use Linux Mandrake 9.0 and I tried all existing sources (on 23/2/2003) and it failed.

So I downloaded and installed the source rpm in the hope of providing a linux solution that all can use. I hope the source will continue to work for future kernels...

NOTE: you may have to install / upgrade other packages to satisfy rpm dependancies, eg I had to upgrade glibc.

Download the compressed tar file and uncompress:

gunzip (filename)

change to superuser

su

Build the source rpm

rpm --rebuild (filename)

If the build is successful, the last line of the command ouput will read exit 0.

To find the built rpm, look a few lines up the page for a line that looks like:

Wrote: /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586/vice-1.10-3mdk.i586.rpm

then use the path+filename and execute the following command:

rpm -ivh (filename)

The installation is done.

To use a joystick

Install the joystick rpm.

I had to create and run the following script (as superuser):

#!/bin/sh #Joystick Stuff modprobe joydev modprobe ns558 modprobe analog chmod 777 /dev/js0

Use the jstest command to calibrate and test the joystick

To run Vice:

x64

If you want help (in Linux), type:

man vice

If you encounter problems, running x64 from a console allows you to view error messages that appear. Search using www.google.com to find solutions. If you cannot get this to work, then either look at the Vice website Vice Website or contact us

Runs in Linux / DOS / Windows 95 / 98
